PHOENIX -- Divers have recovered the body of a maintenance worker who drowned after his lawn mower went into a golf course lake Monday.
The body of the worker, who has not been identified, was recovered about 10:30 a.m. at the Viewpoint RV and Golf Resort near Hawes and Brown roads.
Mesa Deputy Chief Mike Dunn said the worker appears to have gone too close to the edge of the lake at the point of a sharp incline covered in wet grass. Dunn said it was unclear whether the mower rolled into the lake because of the incline or slid because of the wet grass.
Three people saw the mower go into the lake about 8:15 a.m. and tried to help. The victim was “combative” and the man had to back away, Dunn said. When the other two tried to help they couldn't see him in the water.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's dive team assisted the Mesa Fire Department in recovering the body from the lake, which was partly drained.
